오늘, 이 글을 쓰게 된 이유는 귀사의 일본해 표기에 관해 건의 사항이 있기 때문입니다.
최근에 귀사의 웹사이트에 있는 기사에 단독으로 적혀있는 일본해를 보았을 때, 의문이 들었습니다. 인지도 높고,영향력 있는 귀사의 기사에서 실수를 하고 있다는 것에 한국인의 한사람이자 세계인의 한사람으로서 매우 유감스러웠습니다.
원래 동해(일본해)는 예로부터 대한민국과 일본의 중간에 위치한 양국의 공동수역입니다. 그러나 대한민국이 일본의 식민지 지배를 당하면서, 일본해로 바뀌게 되었습니다.1945년 대한민국이 주권을 되찾음으로써, 우리는 우리의 수역을 동해로 표기할 권리를 되찾았습니다. 또한, 동해는 한국, 북한, 러시아, 일본 등 4개국이 접하고 있어 영해 배타적 경제 수역(EEZ) 등 지리적, 경제적, 정치적으로 명백히 다수 국가들의 주권이 미치는 곳 입니다. 그럼에도 특정 국가의 명칭만으로 단독 표기하는 것은 옳지 않습니다.
참고로, 세계 최대의 지도 제작사인 내셔널 지오그래픽, 그래픽 맵스, 론리 플래닛 출판사에서 ‘동해’라고 표기할 것을 약속했고,이미 웹사이트상에서 동해표기를 하고 있습니다.
위와 같은 이유로, 저희는 귀사의 모든 기사들과 지도에 “동해”를 단독으로 사용하거나 혹은 “동해(일본해)” 형식으로 두 이름을 동시에 사용해 줄 것을 요청합니다.

I recently visited your website(—————–)
and discovered that the body of water between the Korean peninsula and Japan
was labeled as the “Sea of Japan.”
Naming this body of water the “Sea of Japan”
is an incorrect label. This is a part of a national effort by the Korean people
to eradicate the legacy of Japanese Imperialism and settle a dispute that has
resulted from it. It is historically erroneous that this is the “Sea of
Japan”. Historical records have shown that China used the term “East
Sea” during ancient dynasties such as the Chin Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty,
the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty.
We are aware of the fact that the International Hydrographic
Organization made “Sea of Japan” official in 1929. However, this was
when Korea was under the colonial rule of Japan and only Japanese
representatives attended the conference. At that time, the name “East
Sea” was removed from maps around the world.
I sincerely ask you to change the name to either the
“East Sea” or describe the body of water by mentioning both Korean
and Japanese designation simultaneously (e.g East Sea/Sea of Japan). Once Korea
and Japan agree on a common title in accordance with the general rule of
international cartography, we can then follow the agreed-upon designation.

今天，冒昧的给贵公司写这封信，是为贵司对“日本海”的标注提出一点建议。
近期，在贵司的网站上看到了一篇题目为( ………………..)的报道，报道中有“日本海”，顿生疑问。像贵公司这样既有知名度、又有影响力的报社，怎么能出现此等错误。我们作为韩国人，更作为这个世界的一分子，深感遗憾。
自古以来，东海（日本海）位于大韩民国和日本的中间，是两国共同的水域。但是，大韩民国沦为日本的殖民地后被称为日本海。1945年，大韩民国重新掌握主权，同时也找回了使用“东海”名称的权利。而且，东海位于韩国、北朝鲜、俄罗斯、日本等四个国家的边缘，从专属经济水域的地理、经济、政治等方面来讲，无疑是多数国家渴望得到的海域。因此，只采用某个国家的标注方式来代表是不公平的。
况且，世界最大规模的地图制作商<国家地理杂志>，<Graphic
Maps>,
<Lonely Planet> 出版社已承诺标注为“东海”， 网站中目前已更正为“东海”。
因此，我们希望贵司也能在新闻和地图上单独使用“东海”或“东海(日本海)”的标注方式。
不知贵司对此建议的立场如何，望尽快回复为盼。
